Psalm for Sunday, January 22, 2017

Reflections

“The Lord is my light and my salvation.”

The Psalm is about trusting the

Lord and our desire to spend
the rest of our days in His
presence. The Psalm says,
"One thing I ask of the Lord;
this I seek: to dwell in the
house of the Lord all the days
of my life.”

Perhaps this desire to be with

the Lord is what inspired Simon
Peter and his brother Andrew
that day by the Sea of Galilee,
when they left their father and
their nets to follow Jesus and
be his disciples (Sunday's Gospel).
Surely, Peter and Andrew recognized

Jesus as their own personal light
and their own personal Savior.
As the Psalm says, "The Lord is
my light and my salvation."

As we grow older, we too take steps

on our journey to be with the Lord,
to enter His house.  Recall that Jesus
said, “My house has many mansions.”
It is no accident that older people
want to go to daily Mass and be with

the Lord as much as possible.  They
are called to that promise of eternal
joy when they may “gaze on the
loveliness of the Lord” all the days
of their lives.

Amen

Discussion Questions for Reflection

1.  Two verses of the Psalm assure us that we should not fear, or be afraid

of anyone, so long as the Lord is our refuge and our salvation.  How do you
apply these verses to your daily life?

2.  Our psalmist asks, "To dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life

that I may gaze on the loveliness of the Lord."   Where is the house of the Lord,
and how do you believe you will get there?

God is so important for us. One of my favorite songs is about wanting to hurry up and be with God. The singer questions what's the point of such a long existence on earth if we are meant to be happy with God. He just wants to be with God now. We have a natural want for the perfect happiness that only God can give us. That feeling is always in us. Our time on earth is important and cannot be wasted, but when we get to heaven, that absolute real, lasting joy will overtake us and we will be so happy to spend the rest of existence with God.

Every time I read or hear Psalm 27 I recall how privileged I am to know Jesus as my Savior.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6)

This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5)

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. (Revelation 21:23)

Placing our trust in the Lord is what saves our life. We must know Jesus as our personal Savior. All we have to do to preserve our life forever is believe in what Jesus did for us at the cross on Calvary.

  3. Where is the house of the Lord? And how do you get there?

I believe God is in Nature, in a garden, on a mountain top, viewing water etc., more so than in some man-made structure of steel, cement, and asphalt. Sometimes a man made structure comes close, but I feel, it’s when it’s interwoven with a high degree of natural setting. I also believe that when you’re very unhappy with your current setting, you will probably be unhappy in any other setting, you select. All of us need to work at being at peace with God.
